Virtual Worlds

There are over 200 virtual worlds (kzero, 2011). The most commonly used by educational institutions in which content creation is controlled by the user are Open Sims, Active Worlds, Reaction Grid, Jokaydia Grid and Second Life. At SCU we use Second Life. As of Feb 2012 we will have an island dedicated to the School of Education with education specific activities.

Second Life

Second Life is a 3D simulated immersive environment that is being used by schools and universities around the world to enhance teaching and learning. SCU has 3 islands in Second Life and the school of education has been using the island to explore ICTs in education.
My name is Lisa Jacka (lis Ruby in Second Life) and I’d like to invite you to explore virtual worlds in education. I will be putting links here to websites, information and virtual worlds to help you explore this exciting new media.
You can download second life for free from www.secondlife.com. You will need to create an avatar or you can use one of the avatars that I have created. Email me for the info.
